Meet Our Board
Executive Leadership
Marlene Sandler Mejia
Chief Executive Officer | Board Member
Marlene Sandler Mejia is an innovative executive with more than 35 years of leadership experience. She began volunteering with The Soup Kitchen in 2000, joined its Board in 2011, and served in several leadership roles before becoming Chief Executive Officer in August 2020.
Under her leadership, the organization has expanded its programs, strengthened partnerships, and increased its impact throughout Palm Beach County. A University of Florida graduate, Marlene is committed to addressing hunger with compassion, dignity, and innovation.
Dimitry Viarenich
Chief Operating Officer
Dimitry Viarenich serves as Chief Operating Officer of The Soup Kitchen, overseeing the organization’s day-to-day operations and helping lead the continued growth and development of its programs and services.
His responsibilities include organizational operations, program implementation, facilities, strategic initiatives, and supporting the organization’s efforts to serve individuals and families experiencing food insecurity throughout Palm Beach County. Dimitry holds a Master in Business Administration from Lynn University.

Jon Maring
President
Jon Maring’s professional career spans more than 45 years in electric power generation, including project development, engineering, construction, and senior utility leadership.
Throughout his career, he worked closely with community leaders and public agencies on major development initiatives. A dedicated volunteer at The Soup Kitchen, Jon joined the Board of Directors in May 2021 and was appointed President in August 2026.
Rich Mascalo
Vice President
Rich Mascolo brings more than 40 years of experience in marketing communications, strategic planning, brand development, and marketing analytics.
A University of Pennsylvania graduate, Rich served as an executive with a leading global advertising agency before founding a marketing consultancy whose clients included major national and international brands. Now retired, he dedicates his experience to nonprofit organizations serving people in need. Rich joined The Soup Kitchen Board in January 2024 and was appointed Vice President in August 2026.
Richard “Dick” Syatt
Vice President
Richard “Dick” Syatt brings a lifetime of experience in hospitality, communications, media, and community engagement.
His career has included radio, event promotion, guest relations, and travel. Dick is also an active Meals on Wheels volunteer and supports The Soup Kitchen’s community outreach and communications efforts. He joined the Board of Directors in October 2020 and was appointed Vice President in August 2026.
Michael M. McCarthy
Treasurer
Michael M. McCarthy has extensive experience in investment, finance, real estate, and community service.
A graduate of Trinity College and a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, Mike has served on numerous community-based boards addressing poverty, healthcare, education, and banking. He joined The Soup Kitchen Board of Directors in December 2017 and was elected Treasurer in September 2019.

Christine Maricic
Christine Maricic is an experienced banking executive with extensive knowledge of business development, community involvement, and the South Florida marketplace.
A native Floridian, Christine is actively involved in local civic and community organizations and brings strong financial and relationship-building expertise to The Soup Kitchen. She joined the Board of Directors in September 2019.
Yolanda “Yoli” Peña Buitrago
Yolanda “Yoli” Peña Buitrago is an accomplished real estate and private investment professional with extensive experience in business, education, and community engagement.
She earned an Executive Leadership credential from Cornell University and a master’s degree from Florida Atlantic University, where she also served as an adjunct professor for 12 years. She joined The Soup Kitchen Board in January 2021 and supports the organization’s fundraising and community outreach efforts.
Roger M. Freedman
Roger M. Freedman is a seasoned business owner with extensive experience in finance, strategic planning, and organizational leadership.
A graduate of the University of Arizona, Roger brings a thoughtful, disciplined approach to governance and long-term sustainability. A longtime supporter of The Soup Kitchen’s mission, he was elected to the Board of Directors in March 2026 and is committed to helping the organization remain stable, effective, and responsive to the evolving needs of the community.
Tracy Sussman
Tracy Sussman is Senior Director of Marketing for the YMCA of South Palm Beach County, where she leads strategic marketing, communications, brand management, digital engagement, and fundraising initiatives.
She brings more than 28 years of experience in marketing, communications, and research, including extensive experience in the nonprofit sector. A graduate of the University of Florida with a degree in Advertising, Tracy has also served organizations including Special Olympics Palm Beach County and the Junior League of Boca Raton. Tracy was elected to The Soup Kitchen Board of Directors in May 2026.

In loving memory of our dear friend and longtime Board President, Tom Ellis, Jr.
For 13 years, Tommy offered dedicated service, leadership, compassion, and unwavering support to our mission and to the people we serve. He was far more than our Board President—he was a trusted colleague, a steadfast advocate, and a cherished friend to so many in the TSK family.
Tommy’s impact on The Soup Kitchen and our community will remain a lasting part of his legacy. We are deeply grateful for all he gave, the lives he touched, and the many years he devoted to our mission. His memory will always hold a special place in The Soup Kitchen family, and he will be deeply missed.
